PDX Sonic Case Studies

BACKGROUND

Our customer's production site is based in the UK, with a head office located in Sweden and they are part of a worldwide group with a turnover of £1.2 billion per annum. Our customer's primary business is the refining of edible oils and their strategy is to move into higher added-value products which use oil as an ingredient.

CUSTOMER'S OBJECTIVES

In 2006 our customer purchased a UK site which produces tomato ketchup, brown sauces, BBQ sauce, mint sauce and mustard. The customer wished to invest in the site's manufacturing capacity, bring the site back into profitability and increase productivity to make way for further products.

THE OPPORTUNITY

To remove two existing 1 tonne cooking vessels, and provide a cooking system with the capability to produce sauces at 3.6 tonnes per hour. Therefore our aims were:

  • Reduce processing time
  • Reduce ingredients
  • Reduce Clean-in-place time

A PDX Sonic system was installed in February 2007, designed to produce condiment sauce at a rate of 3.6 tonnes per hour. The system is fully automated and produces three 1.2 tonne batches per hour. All bulk liquids are pumped directly into the main batch vessel; the system then uses three PDX 47s, (one in the main batch vessel, and one in each of the two parallel recirculation lines to produce a batch).

Bulk powders are entrained directly into the process flow prior to each of the in-line PDX 47s from two 50 litre powder hoppers. The system is supplied with a buffer vessel to which the 1.2 tonne batch of finished product is pumped using a discharge pump. The system is cleaned in place from a conventional CIP unit with a much reduced CIP time.
