PDX Wort Heater Case Studies
Shepherd Neame Brewery in Faversham Kent, are maybe Britain's oldest brewers but are utilising some of Britain's newest and most innovative technology.
Shepherd Neame Brewery in Faversham, Kent has 2 brewstreams, Pursuit Dynamics have installed PDX® Wort Heaters onto both. The first unit has now been operating in full production since March 2008. The second unit is now installed and in the final stages of commissioning.
Traditionally Shepherd Neame used an external kalandria to heat the wort from -67°C to boiling point and then boil the brew for -1 hour to achieve 9% evaporation. The small footprint of the PDX Wort Heater enabled it to be retro-fitted as a recirculation loop alongside the kalandria. Since the PDX Wort Heater was installed on the ale stream, Shepherd Neame have consistently achieved energy savings in the brewhouse in excess of 45% and reduced their overall cycle time by an average of 20%. This has been achieved due to the PDX Wort Heater being used to carry out a 30 minute boil achieving -2.5% evaporation.
POINT OF USE ENERGY SAVINGS
| Typical Raise to Boil Energy (MJ) | Typical Boil Energy (MJ) | Typical Total Energy (MJ) | |
| Kalandria | 4754 | 4486 | 9240 |
| PDX | 3795 | 1103 | 4898 |
| Typical Savings | 20% | 75% | 47% |
The energy savings generated by the PDX Wort Heater can be equated to a reduction in emissions of approximately 300 tonnes of CO2 per year.
"Following the successful installation of the first production PDX wort heater in the world for our ale stream, we are delighted to be working with Pursuit Dynamics on testing the newly-installed second unit. The project has been managed from concept to commissioning by a joint Pursuit Dynamics and Shepherd Neame team. The benefits of process time reduction are clear and the energy savings have been achieved as expected. The project was delivered on time and to budget without disruption to output".
